Mall Walkers – 2:30
The story:
Hundreds of people descend on the Fox River Mall each morning to pound the tile for a mall walking workout. Exercise, fun and the gift of gab keep mall walker Ed Borski, 77, of Menasha, regularly coming back to the mall. “I just plain enjoy it. I like to talk to people. I talk to everybody.”
My take:
I was in hot pursuit of a real meat and bones story for my next video project. Perhaps something edgy and controversial. I searched relentlessly for a good five minutes. My intent was to Google “stalking.” I instead typed, “walking”. And thus the subculture of Mall Walking was revealed. Needless to say, I ran with it. What did I find, you may ask? Could it be a breeding ground for hoodlums and vagrants? Not quite. Maybe I stumbled onto the underbelly of a massive narcotic operation? I didn’t see that either. What I did I find was a whole cast of really friendly people looking to get some exercise and make a friend or two along the way. So besides the digestion of a little caffeine in the form of coffee, there was nothing sensational about it. However, I did notice mall officials preparing for the arrival of the Easter Bunny. If there’s only one Easter Bunny, how is she able to visit hundreds of malls all at the same time? Hmmm. Stay tuned.
